Romantic places to stay on a budget

So, this is all strictly on the hush hush... we wouldn’t want the other half to find out you’re penny pinching, would we? But if you could get away with a wonderfully romantic weekend away in the UK without breaking the already-wobbly bank account well, you would wouldn’t you?

The question is: is there such a thing as a cheap romantic hotel or a budget romantic bed and breakfast anymore? Well, it all depends on your definition of romance. If you’re looking for the works - champagne, roll-top bath, top-rated dinner for two in the restaurant downstairs - then of course there isn’t, don’t be silly. But if you are willing to be imaginative and flexible, then there are some beautiful little places to stay in the UK for under £90 a night that could become the perfect romantic rendez-vous for the cash-strapped.

Rookery Nook, Shere
A real Weekenders favourite and the perfect romantic retreat for those who don’t want to venture too far from London. The pretty village of Shere was the location for romcom, The Holiday, so its love credentials are pretty strong.

Cotland House, Burford
A Cotswolds bolthole just outside the chocolate-box, Antiques-filled town of Burford. Think cosy pubs, country walks and a big tick from the one you love.

Dolphin House, Batheaston
You can’t beat Bath for a bit of Austen-esque romance, but staying in the centre of the city will usually cost you an arm and a leg. Not only will this lovely little b&b, just outside the busy centre, save you some cash, but you can stay in your own tiny apartment named after Miss Austen herself!

The George Inn, Hubberholme
Get away from EVERYTHING in this wonderful pub in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales. Enjoy a pint by the fireside, bracing hill walks and plenty of invigorating fresh air.

Gleaners in the Alley, Deal
For a romantic weekend by the sea, this tiny b&b is perfect. Tucked away from the bustling centre of Deal, the beach is just a few minutes’ walk away and you get homemade cake and your own sitting room. Perfect.
