If spectacular views and lots of fresh air are what you’re looking for, this friendly pub with rooms in the heart of the Peak District has them in spades. A classic English 18th-century inn, it is warm, welcoming and simplicity at its best, but with the most breathtaking views from the beer garden and bedrooms.
The Lantern Pike’s owners Tom and Stella Cunliffe have made sure that the roaring fires, great ales and local bonhomie of the Great British Pub ™ have been maintained, while offering lovely bedrooms upstairs for visitors. Simply, but very comfortably furnished, the rooms offer comfy beds, en-suite bathrooms and those fantastic views.
The Inn’s gardens are its star attraction, with long-ranging views of Lantern Pike itself and the surrounding Peak District countryside. Visit in the summer for long, ale-fuelled evenings on the patio as you watch the sun set over this stunning landscape.
The Lantern Pike Inn sits in the tiny village of Little Hayfield, nestled in a small valley at High Peak. In the north west of the Peak District, it’s only 15 miles from Manchester, but the tranquility and beauty of its surroundings couldn’t be more different.
The main draw of staying in the area is, of course the dramatic Peak District, with its crags, hills, valleys, villages and miles and miles of fabulous walking. Little Hayfield is within an hour’s drive from the best the area has to offer, including Chatsworth House, The Heights of Abraham and High Peak. For everything you need to know about what to see and where to eat, read The Weekenders Guide to The Peak District.
But, it’s unnecessary to travel far, or even get in your car, to enjoy Derbyshire’s amazing countryside from The Lantern Pike Inn. Walks beginning and ending at Little Hayfield are plentiful, taking you along giggle gaggles, over styles, past mills and tiny hamlets and up Lantern Pike itself. A brilliant, heart-pumping option is the walk from the nearby village of Hayfield (internationally famous as the birthplace of Captain Mainwaring from Dad’s Army) up Kinder Scout. The views never cease to amaze, and you’ll find it easy to keep your lungs satisfied for at least the next six months.
The Lantern Pike offers good, hearty pub fare, which will probably be all you’re after once you’ve spent the day walking the peaks.
Alternatively, for something a little more sophisticated, The Waltzing Weasel Inn (www.w-weasel.co.uk Tel: 01663 743402) in Birch Vale, 2 miles, and walkable, from Little Hayfield, is a great little place. Named as Derbyshire Dining Pub of the Year for six years in a row, the Weasel’s menus are lovingly-cooked with fresh, local ingredients and accompanied by a fab wine list.
