Cosy Yorkshire B&B

If you thought British B&B’s were all about dodgy décor, grumpy owners and stingy, greasy breakfasts, then this gorgeous guest house will be a revalation. One of the new breed of luxury bed and breakfasts, Low Penhowe offers luxury, comfort and fantastic food, surrounded by some of the best views Yorkshire has to offer.

Owners Philippa and Christopher Turner have turned their Yorkshire Wolds farmhouse into a welcoming and cosy place to stay. The two double bedrooms (one en-suite and one with separate, private bathroom) are light and airy, yet cosy, and offer tremendous views over Low Penhowe’s gardens and paddocks – complete with hairy Highland cattle and chickens.

But it’s the breakfasts that are the real star attraction. Multi award-winning, Philippa and Christophers’ jaw-dropping breakfast spreads are the talk of the local, and national, press. The list of treats on offer is neverending. From their own free-range eggs to locally-cured bacon and black pudding, kippers from Bridlington and home-roasted York ham, poached Low Penhowe rhubarb, home-baked bread and home-made jams and marmalades - there has never been a better reason to set your alarm a little early (or skip dinner the night before!)

Where is it?

The tiny village of Burythorpe sits in the middle of the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Wolds, with views towards Castle Howard and, in the distance, the Yorkshire Moors. It’s great walking country, with the magical ruins of Kirkham Priory a good place to aim for from Low Penhowe. The amazing Castle Howard (www.castlehoward.co.uk Tel: 01653 648 444) – the famous location for Brideshead Revisited – is just 7 miles away.

The nearest town is picturesque Malton – a ten minute drive away. With its bustling town square, Yorkshire stone shops and houses and plentiful drinking holes, it’s typical of many attractive North Yorkshire market towns, and a handy reminder of civilization in the middle of this rural idyll. For something a little busier, head for York, just half an hour from Low Penhowe. For all the best things to see and do in the gorgeous medieval city, check out The Weekender's Guide to York.

Where can I eat?

If the breakfasts at Low Penhowe don’t fill you up for the rest of the day, there are some excellent foodie pubs within a very short drive, or a slightly longer, but very enjoyable walk. The Stone Trough Inn (www.stonetroughinn.co.uk Tel: 01653 618713) in Kirkham, next to the pretty Priory, is cosy and friendly, with a huge range of local ales. Its award-winning menu includes proper British comfort food, made from locally-sourced ingredients, but with a sophisticated twist. The Blacksmiths Inn in Westow (Tel: 01653 618365) is another award-winning gastro-pub, with great food served at cosy, candlelit tables.

For something really special, try The Star Inn at Harome, near Helmsley (www.thestaratharome.co.uk Tel: 01439 770397). This Michelin-starred legend, that has London restaurant critics speeding up the M1, is half an hour’s drive from Burythorpe, and is a real treat. Amazing British dishes are served in a cosy, candlelit restaurant that used to be a cowshed, while the bar offers an even more relaxing atmosphere, along with a great lunch menu.

York offers a great range of fab places to eat. For a round-up of the best, read The Weekender's Guide to York.
