Bath has to be one of the top three weekender destinations in the UK, and deservedly so. A maze of stunning Georgian architecture, lined up on steep, hill-side avenues and sweeping crescents, it’s Austen-esque romance on tap, and an aimless meanderer’s paradise. Three Abbey Green captures the very essence of Bath - a friendly and welcoming guest house, complete with a four-poster bedroom, in a gorgeous, Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse. And to top it all, it overlooks one of the most picturesque cobbled squares in the heart of the city.
Three Abbey Green’s seven bedrooms are spacious and airy, with huge sash windows overlooking the square. This is no five-star hotel, but is all the better for it, with period features and antique furniture making this a lovely home from home and a rather more authentic way to stay in Bath than in its super-chic, super-expensive city centre peers. Owners Sue and Derek have lovingly ensured that this is a perfect place to kick back, relax and wallow in the romance of it all - books and stereos in the rooms almost demand that you curl up and take it easy.
All of the guest house’s elegant, yet comfy bedrooms are en-suite, and are all different. The largest rooms are on the first floor, with the magnificent Lord Nelson taking up the space of two bedrooms, and boasting a four-poster bed and huge working fireplace. Little Lilliput Court on the floor above is small in comparison, but probably the most romantic and cosy bedroom in the house, with a cute little window overlooking Three Abbey Green’s courtyard. Some have window seats perfect for watching the world go by, while others have bigger bathrooms - Sue and Derek will point you in the direction of which you’d like best (if you manage to book early enough). Oh, and the breakfasts are fab.
But the best thing about Three Abbey Green has to be its location. Everything that’s wonderful about Bath, from the Abbey to the Pump Rooms are within a few minutes’ walk from the doorstep.
IT’S IN BATH! Yes, in case you hadn’t noticed, Three Abbey Green is sat in the middle of one of Britain’s most beautiful cities. For the definitive guide to what to see, do and eat while you’re staying, read The Weekender's Guide to Bath.
