Another great British luxury B&B, this gothic, grade II-listed gem is perfectly placed for the Yorkshire Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and is only a twenty minute drive away from York city centre.
Three cosy double bedrooms, with great views from the windows, DVD players and very welcome power showers are situated in the main house. The friendly owners of Welburn Lodge, Stella and Steve, live in a separate building from the guest bedrooms, so visitors have all the comforts of a home from home, without feeling like they’re treading on anyone’s toes.
Breakfasts are, of course, spot on, with yummy lighter options for anyone who can’t handle the full monty (although you’ll be surprised how all that fresh air can enlarge even the smallest stomach!).
Welburn Lodge sits on the main road from York into Malton, at the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Don’t let the close proximity of the road put you off though – the traffic noise is minimal, and the welcome you’ll receive far outweighs any logistical concerns.
In fact, you couldn’t be better placed for visiting some of Yorkshire’s most spectacular attractions, both natural and man-made. The nearest town is picturesque Malton – a ten minute drive away. With its bustling town square, Yorkshire stone shops and houses and plentiful drinking holes, it’s typical of many attractive North Yorkshire market towns. It’s also a great jumping-off point for exploring the windswept Yorkshire Moors.
Travel a little further north to pretty Pickering, and you can take a romantic ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway to the brilliant seaside town of Whitby (www.nymr.co.uk Tel: 01751 472508).
Welburn Lodge’s main draw, however, is its close proximity to the Palladian marvel that is Castle Howard (www.castlehoward.co.uk Tel: 01653 648 444) – the famous filming location for Brideshead Revisited. The bedrooms look over the huge Howardian Estate, and the house itself is a 5 minute drive, or a scenic 45-minute walk away.
The gorgeous medieval city of York is only 14 miles from Welburn Lodge. For the best things to see and places to eat in the city, check out The Weekender's Guide to York.
This is real pub dining country, but don’t expect the usual frozen scampi and chips, this is the real deal.
The little village of Welburn is home to The Crown and Cushion pub (Tel: 01653 618304), a short walk from Welburn Lodge, and the nearest pub to Castle Howard. A cosy interior, great views of the surrounding countryside and delicious, home-cooked food (try their Yorkshire pudding for the ultimate in comfort eating) make for a perfect mid-walk fuel stop.
Otherwise, The Stone Trough Inn (www.stonetroughinn.co.uk Tel: 01653 618713) in nearby Kirkham, next to the pretty Kirkham Priory, is cosy and friendly, with a huge range of local ales. Its award-winning menu includes proper British comfort food, made from locally-sourced ingredients, but with a sophisticated twist. The Blacksmiths Inn in Westow (Tel: 01653 618365) is another award-winning gastro-pub, with great food served at cosy, candlelit tables.
For something really special, try The Star Inn at Harome, near Helmsley (www.thestaratharome.co.uk Tel: 01439 770397). This Michelin-starred legend, that has London restaurant critics speeding up the M1, is half an hour’s drive from Malton, and is a real treat. Amazing British dishes are served in a cosy, candlelit restaurant that used to be a cowshed, while the bar offers an even more relaxing atmosphere, along with a great lunch menu.
