An amazing family-run venture, this guest house-cum-tea room-cum-restaurant-cum-shop-cum-art gallery seems to be growing by the day! Originally a magnificent Georgian farmstead, which included an old coaching inn, Wolds Village has been turned into a unique place to stay.
The accommodation is set inside a recently-built stable block – not that you’d ever guess it was any newer than the listed buildings it sits next to. Reclaimed bricks and tiles have made this modern addition truly authentic. Inside, seven spacious bedrooms have been decorated to reflect a different historical period – and it’s been pulled off with great class and comfort. The Tudor room has reclaimed beams and wooden panels, together with a gorgeous four-poster tester bed. Meanwhile, you can sample cosy decadence in the Victorian room, classic elegance in the Georgian room and chic minimalism in the Art Deco room. Flat screen tellies and great en-suite facilities ensure that modern comforts are still very much taken care of.
Other parts of the ‘village’ include a tearoom, with an original Georgian open fireplaceand beamed ceilings, and a popular restaurant. Both offer classic English home cooking, made with locally-sourced ingredients.
Wolds Village is situated at Bainton, a village in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds. Often forgotten in the wake of the Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales, this area of natural beauty in East Yorkshire is pretty, tranquil, unspoilt and home to some of the country’s best walks and cycle rides. The area’s best walking route is the 79-mile Yorkshire Wolds Way, which passes from the Humber to the sea at Bridlington, through ancient villages, over undulating hills and past some fantastic pubs. But if you can’t face the two days or more of hard walking it would take to do the whole trail, you can pick up the path close to Bainton just have a potter.
One of the best ways to see the tranquil Wolds is by glider. The Wolds Gliding Club (www.wolds-gliding.org Tel: 01759 303579) at Pocklington, is a 15-minute drive from Bainton. They offer trial lessons from £35 per person and couldn’t be happier to show off this beautiful stretch of countryside.
If you want to venture further afield, the Yorkshire Moors National Park is only 45 minutes drive away from Bainton, as is the gorgeous city of York. The wild East Yorkshire coastline, including the Spurn National Nature Reserve (often called the oddest place in England for its shifting sands and thousands of migrating birds), is under half an hour away.
Wolds Village has its own restaurant, which is open for lunches every day (the Sunday roast is amazing) and dinners on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Classic British cooking, made with local ingredients make it very popular with residents and locals alike.
A wonderful alternative is The Pipe and Glass at South Dalton (www.pipeandglass.co.uk Tel: 01430 810246), 5 miles from Bainton. This multi-award-winning gastro pub has recently been taken over by chef James Mackenzie, formerly head chef at the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Harome, and is becoming East Yorkshire’s number one culinary destination. The pretty 15th-century countryside pub has a cosy bar for informal dining, and a restaurant for that special night out. The seasonal menus and unique, hand-picked wine list are sumptuous, but great value, and include puddings to die for.
